If I have to connect heavy mono leader line to heavy fluoro carbon leader line, I'd rather use barrel swivel with short 4 - 6 ft fluoro carbon leader line as any knot to connect heavy mono and fluoro must have a high profile no matter what kind of knot you use and the use of swivel is much stronger. I would fish #80 to #100 Braid on the popping rod with #130 or #100 Fluor leader. If you hook into a nice Cubera you will need it, and the fish don't seem to mind the heavier leader. Most of my offshore setups (conventional) are spooled with either 50 or 65 pound braid, usually do about a 25-30 yard topshot of 30-50 pound flouro depending on what fish I'm targeting. The braid allows for more of it, even though the weakest part is going to be your mono topshot. I wouldn't recommend using braid directly ...The mainline loop is a critical part of a loop to loop connection system. Done correctly, the mainline loop is a line-doubler. A well chosen line-doubler reduces the tension of the in the loop by half, with no loss of strength (e.g. if the mainline tension is 40 lbs., the tension in the line inside the loop, is only 20 lbs--almost magic).The biggest targeted species are amberjack and snapper with a possible grouper here and there, up to 70 lbs. I went through the decision process myself and settled on the 18K's for both. One for popping and one for jigging. My Popping set-up is 65lb Suffix on 7'6" FTU Black Magic, and it has performed very well on our schoolie sized (50-70lbs) yellowfin. i like the 300 gram size butterfly jigs for dropping to catch tuna's. i prefer the long skinny jigs in the 300 to 400 gram size for jigging up snappers and groupers in deeper water over 200ft. a lot of times the current dictates using lighter or heavier jigs to get a verticle jigging action and a better idea of what depth the fish are holding and feeding. ….
